NGS Unveils Recipients of its Prestigious 2020 Awards and Competition Honors

On 20 May 2020 at the Virtual Family History Conference, NGS 2020 Live! The National Genealogical Society’s spokesperson, Susan Yockey, disclosed the 2020 awards for outstanding individuals and their respective achievements in the field of genealogical services.

George Ely Russell was inducted into the National Genealogy Hall of Fame for his significant influence on American genealogy. Russell was prolific in his analysis, recording and writing on genealogical matters, with around 150 publications to his name. He acted as editor to several notable genealogical publications, was a respected lecturer and mentor, and provided notable contributions to the field up until his both in Ijamsville, Maryland, on 9 January 2013.

The National Genealogical Society Fellowship honored Ronald Ames Hill, who is celebrated for his genealogical work. Hill has authored eighteen articles for the eminent NGSQ journal and has actively contributed to the field of genealogy by serving on the journal’s editorial board for seventeen years.

Ric Murphy was awarded The President’s Citation for his exceptional and continuous contributions to genealogical research. Murphy, who is currently serving as the national vice president for history for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), has displayed a commitment towards highlighting the rich contributions of African Americans in U.S. history.

The Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship was presented to Kris Rzepczynski, senior archivist at the Archives of Michigan. His dedication to genealogical archival collections and his enthusiasm in personal research guidance was highlighted in the award motivation.

The Utah Genealogical Association, under the leadership of Kelly Summers, was honored with The Conference Award for their dedicated support of the 2020 NGS Family History Conference. Several other individuals who contributed towards the success of the conference were also recognized with the Conference Certificates of Appreciation.

The NGS Awards for Excellence acknowledged various commendable genealogical publications and distinguished authors. Among the winners were George L.Findlen, Robert C. Anderson and Melinda Daffin Henningfield.

The NGS Newsletter Competition winners were identified among major genealogical and historical societies, local societies and family associations. A handful of these winners included Deborah R. Harvey, Miriam Machida, Jim Regan and Charles C. Morgan.

The Rubincam Youth Writing Contest awarded Jason DiRusso and Andrea Bergamaschi as winners for their exceptional genealogical writing. Honorable mentions included Logan Starkey and Elizabeth Bradshaw.

The National Genealogical Society extends congratulatory messages to all the 2020 awardees and competition winners and acknowledges the hard work and commitment of the members who played significant roles in this year’s awards. Subsequently, everyone is encouraged to contribute by nominating worthy individuals and organizations for next year’s awards and competitions.
