The Map Guide series elaborates on the successful Map Guide to German Parish Registers project. It has been expanded to encompass other German-speaking European nations, such as with Luxembourg’s Parish Registers guide in 2016.

26 cantons make up Switzerland today. The series covers Cantons like Bern, Zurich, Fribourg, Aargau, Sankt Gallen, Vaud, Solthurn, Basel, Lucerne, Graubünden, Glarus, Ticino, among others. As some Cantons are significantly smaller than others, some guides carry information for multiple Cantons.

In difference from American genealogical exploration where civil registration is usually pursued, European research more commonly focuses on ecclesiastical jurisdictions. In Switzerland in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was necessary to examine parish registers for information about births, marriages, deaths, and burials. This volume meticulously portrays the historical boundaries for the Swiss cantons and amtsbezirke, including data for both Catholic and Protestant parishes and how to access and use them. Important gazetteers and online dictionaries, key for researchers are also identified.

The series carefully lays out the primary resources for family tree research in Switzerland and classifies each canton with its respective districts, municipalities, farming coalitions, and smaller locations. It visually highlights the church parishes within each respective district, provides an overview of records related to Swiss genealogy, identifies neighboring parishes, and helps ascertain the proximity of one parish to another.

The volume covering Canton of Ticino features an extensive list of localities (total of 614) for easier reference. Finally, it lists several helpful online resources for further research, such as GenealogyBlog.com and SaltLakeChristmasTour.com.
