Wishing You a Joyous Thanksgiving & Sharing an Unavoidable Update

By | July 29, 2023

To all my American readers, I wish you a joyous Thanksgiving holiday! To everyone else, I send my best wishes.

I don’t often share personal tidbits, but I feel it’s time for an update to you, my friends.

It’s been a year of fewer writings from me than usual; it’s been a challenging one indeed. On August 8, 2019, I underwent surgery to fuse my cervical vertebrae, hoping to alleviate my neck and upper back discomfort caused by spinal arthritis. The results were positive initially, but complications developed as the fusion increased pressure on the nerves above and below (C5-7). I’ve been struggling with persistent pain, somewhat mitigated by medication. Sitting at the computer has become a painful ordeal, so I’ve avoided it. There’s hope though – my doctor believes we might have found a solution that will reintroduce some normalcy into my life. After two trial injections reduced my pain temporarily, a procedure has been scheduled for December 9 to burn off the nerves, potentially freeing me from pain for six months to a year. Yes, the nerves will regrow, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. I’m hopeful for a period of less pain ahead and eagerly anticipate returning to a more active blogging and newsletter schedule. Just wanted to give you the insight as to why I’ve been a bit quiet.

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our lives topsy-turvy, inflicting unforeseen stress. We yearn for it to recede into the rearview mirror so everyone can regain a semblance of normal life.

Despite the tumult, Family Roots Publishing is thriving, producing new books – both research guides and source records. While wrapping up some projects, we steadily forge ahead with others. We’re prepping for a productive 2021. Heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support and kindness. Stay healthy!
